Localpulse is a crowdsourcing city improvement app developed by me and my friends from late 2015 to April 2016. This app aims to replace the cumbersome civic problem reports by a less than 60-second process of taking a picture of the problem and writing a short description about it. We made it a multi-platform app that is compatible for iOS and Android.

I led the team as the product manager. In addition, I went beyond my responsibility and worked on UI & UX design, front-end developer, market research, and business strategy development.

To better understand the pain points in civic engagement, I performed qualitative market research, competitive differentiation of the city improvement app category, organized focus groups, and interviewed the local city mayor. The findings further informed the vision, design, and business strategies for Localpulse.

The following are a few snapshots of Localpulse, its functionalities, and my contributions:

Dashboard (UI & UX Design and Programming):

  • Having the problem posts occupy the main page highlights the uniqueness of Localpulse in its utilization of crowdsourcing.

  • The majority of the interface is covered by images, which facilitates users’ navigation.

  • The minimalistic interface and the color scheme (blue-white) also gives the users a sense of welcoming.

Submission Page (UI & UX Design):

  • The simplistic submission page minimizes distractions and hurdles for the users.

  • Once the citizen uploads the problem, Localpulse will automatically grab the geotag of the smartphone as the location of the civic problem.

Heat Map (UI & UX Design and Programming):

  • The heat map was designed and implemented using Esri’s ArcGIS API in JavaScript, a language I had no knowledge of prior to developing Localpulse.

  • The different sizes of the circles reflect the number of votes received by each problem, offering a straightforward visualization of the civic problems to the local government officials.

Expanded View of Problem Post (UI & UX Design):

  • Citizens and government officials can directly comment on the problem posts, which encourages a live and transparent dialogue in the local city.
